Make, n8n or Zapier? Compare the workflow, not the hype

Three ways to connect applications. The right choice depends on your connections, technical comfort and maintenance budget.

Updated 04/10/2026

Make: start with a visual workflow

Make presents automation visually. Consider it when you want to map branching steps and inspect how information moves between applications. Verify the exact actions available for your apps, not just whether their logos appear in a directory.

n8n: consider who will maintain it

n8n offers cloud and self-hosted options. Self-hosting may suit teams that can manage the infrastructure, updates and backups. It does not remove operating costs or the need to check licence terms. For a first test, decide who will respond when a workflow fails.

Zapier: check the trigger and action

Zapier connects applications using triggers and actions. Test whether the particular event you need is supported, how quickly it runs and which account permissions it requires. A connection to an app does not mean every operation in that app is available.

Our comparison method

These are selection notes based on official documentation, not a hands-on benchmark or ranked review. Test the same ten sample inputs in every candidate. Compare failed-run handling, permissions and total cost at your expected volume. Check current plans on the vendor website before purchasing.
